1. MODULE BRIEF
Doc. 1.1 Module Information Booklet - Intercultural Design.
Lecture Note
Intercultural design is the process of developing goods, services, or
environments that consider the cultural backgrounds, values, and interests
of various groups of people. Comprehending and integrating aspects from
diverse cultures is necessary to create solutions that are considerate,
inclusive, and applicable to a broad spectrum of consumers.

5. FEEDBACK
Feedback (20/2/2024)
Miss Noranis was supported and encouraged our Baba-Nyonya theme. She praised that our 3 sketches (Nyonya Doll, Pastry Box, Folding Fan) are all good ideas.
Feedback (3/3/2024)
We told Miss Noranis that we were planning to go Melaka for our Data collection. She was very kindly telling us to be careful with the heatwave and sudden rainstorm and hope we have fun there.
Feedback (6/3/2024)
We asked which sketch of our group was approved (Patung Nyonya, pastry box, folding fan) and Miss Noranis replied that we have to based on the findings to make the final decision of the output.
6. REFLECTIONS
Project 1 - Proposal
I found the proposal job in the first stage of the module to be both insightful and challenging. My task involved delving into the complicated process of creating designs for diverse cultural environments, taking into consideration factors like sensitivity to culture, diversity, and adaptability. I now have a better understanding of how crucial it is to recognise and appreciate cultural variations in design processes as a result of this assignment. By creating a proposal, we were able to lay out my strategy and goals for the upcoming assignments and provide a strong framework for the remainder of the module.
Project 2 - Data Collection
One of the most important steps in the intercultural design process was gathering data. To help with design selections, information was gathered from a variety of sources, such as community members, cultural experts, and previously published research. I gained important understanding of the various viewpoints, preferences, and requirements of many cultural groups from this assignment. Through data analysis, we were able to find trends, obstacles, and possibilities related to my design project. It also emphasised how crucial it is to carry out in-depth research and incorporate stakeholders at every stage of the design process in order to guarantee inclusion and relevance.
Thoughts on the Melaka One-Day Trip:
We started our day by enjoying a traditional Baba Nyonya lunch at a local Nyonya restaurant. Indulge in flavorful dishes bursting with aromatic spices and rich flavours. After that, we took a leisurely stroll along Jonker Street, soaking in the charming atmosphere of the historic neighbourhood and marvelling at the colourful shophouses, adorned with traditional Peranakan motifs and architecture. We also had the pleasure of interviewing a shop owner, who provided us with fresh insights into this behaviour. In the evening, we visited the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum and explored the beautifully preserved Peranakan mansion, adorned with intricate furnishings, artefacts, and heirlooms that offer a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the Baba Nyonya families. Overall, I gained a lot of knowledge about Baba Nyonya culture.
Final Project - Final Product
It was a satisfying and challenging endeavour to create a final product based on intercultural design concepts. Using the knowledge I had obtained during the proposal and data gathering stages, we created a design that attempted to meet the demands that had been identified while taking cultural diversity into consideration. By including aspects of adaptability, diversity, and intercultural communication, we aimed to develop a solution that would appeal to a broad range of consumers. We improved the design through revisions and comments to make sure it worked well.
In summary, this module gave me insightful information, abilities, and experiences that will guide my future efforts to design for a variety of cultural situations. It emphasised how crucial empathy, cultural sensitivity, and teamwork are to producing inclusive and memorable designs. Upon contemplating my progress through the module, I'm inspired to keep going in investigating and promoting intercultural design ideas within my field of interest.
